Hollywood has distorted the practice of hypnosis to suit its need for dramatic effect for decades. They would have us believe that hypnosis is a type of truth serum or a brainwashing technique. Hypnosis is neither a truth serum nor a form of brainwashing. You can choose to lie and edit what you say while in hypnosis. You will not give information or divulge secrets unless you choose to because you cannot be overpowered or controlled while in hypnosis.
The notion that you can be made to do something against your will is totally false because the ego, which acts as a protective mechanism, is present during hypnosis. Your ego operates under the Law of Dominate Affect which dictates that the strongest emotion wins. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything that is outside of your moral code of ethics.
You cannot loose consciousness or get stuck in hypnosis. You do not go to sleep or lose consciousness while in hypnosis. In fact, you may or may not feel relaxed at various times during a session. The senses are usually enhanced in hypnosis so the client hears and is acutely aware of everything that is going on.
The strong minded and intelligent do not respond well to hypnosis is another fallacy. As a rule, the more intelligent and creative you are the easier it will be to hypnotize you and for you to get the results you desire. Clients resolve problems by receiving information from their own inner minds with the processing techniques facilitated by the therapist.
